Lymphatic drainage massage (MLD)

Published on 11 August 2026 at 15:12

I trained in Lymphatic massage in 2023 and in the last 3 years have seen some wonderful results, I have treated clients after operations aiding with their recovery, those with Lymphedema  being able to reduce the swelling as well as clients who are looking to improve wellness and other symptoms.

Our lymphatic system is one of the main elimination channels in the body.

It is a major factor in the absorption of nutrients and how the body removes its metabolic wastes. It is dependent upon muscle contractions, diaphragmatic breathing, and body movement.

Lymphatic fluid is filtered by pea sized lymph nodes and returned to the circulatory system. It is common to develop a sluggish lymphatic flow, some causes of this include inactivity, consuming the wrong foods and drinks, and not drinking enough water.

Lymphatic drainage massage (MLD) is a technique that is designed to stimulate the lymph’s circulation to speed up the removal of waste from the body.

It is helpful for the nervous system as it

  • reduces sympathetic nervous activity & allows para-sympathetic activity
  • stimulates the defenses of the immune system
  • increases the flow and volume of the lymph fluid

The technique involves the use of gentle, rhythmic strokes and pumping movements towards the direction of the lymph nodes on the body.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a light and superficial massage that stimulated the lymph nodes which are just under the skin. It is carried out without the use of oil which enables the client to stay fully clothed if desired.

The benefits of lymphatic massage include:

  • improving circulation, in turn increasing the metabolic rate
  • helping with weight loss
  • reducing fluid retention
  • eliminating toxins, thus aiding detoxification
  • reducing cellulite fat in the body
  • improving immunity
  • helping with sinus congestion and allergies
  • fibromyalgia
  • fatigue
  • IBS
  • hormonal imbalances
  • arthritic conditions & pain
  • improving scars & stretch marks
  • reducing stress
  • neurological disorders
  • overall wellbeing

After Care Advice

Drink plenty of water or herbal teas following the treatment to assist in removing the toxins from the body.

Rest after the massage to be able to benefit from the massage.

Do not drink tea, coffee or alcohol or cola.

Avoid eating a heavy meal instead eat a light and natural diet avoiding any processed foods that could raise toxicity levels again in the body.

Try not to smoke/vape for 24 hours after a massage.

For improved results I recommend a course of massage along with adding in some new habits at home. It is beneficial to plan for 1 treatment fortnightly at the beginning, increasing to monthly and then every 6 weeks until we reach a point of maintenance. This is entirely flexible and will be led by you and based on your first treatment. I run lymphatic workshops to help you with your at home routine.

Exercise that can drain our lymph nodes,

  • walking or jogging
  • bouncing
  • arm-swinging
  • skipping

Deep Breathing

Deep breathing exercises stimulate lymph flow and bring fresh oxygen deep down into the lungs and so to every cell.

Dry Brushing

Dry brushing stimulates the lymph flow and blood circulation, improves muscle tone, tightens skin and reduces cellulite releasing fatty deposits under the skins surface.
